If you die without a Will, the rules of intestacy decide who inherits your estate, and this rarely matches what people actually want. A spouse doesn’t automatically inherit everything, unmarried partners get nothing at all, and stepchildren are excluded unless named directly. Inheritance tax can also increase, the family home may need to be sold to divide the estate, and if no eligible relative can be found, your assets can pass to the Crown.
